Frequently Asked Questions
-
Dementia coaching is a personalized, one-on-one support service designed to help people living with dementia, families, and care partners navigate the challenges of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Through dementia coaching, you can gain practical knowledge, communication strategies, care planning support, and the confidence to make informed decisions at every stage of the journey.
-
Dementia coaching is for anyone touched by an Alzheimer's or dementia diagnosis, including people living with an Alzheimer's or dementia diagnosis who want education, support, and help planning for the future while they are still actively engaged in their own care, family members and care partners managing day-to-day dementia care, adult children supporting a parent from near or far, families navigating a new diagnosis and not sure where to start, couples where one partner has received a dementia diagnosis, and families facing complex care decisions such as when to consider memory care placement, how to manage behavioral changes, or how to plan for the future.
-
Absolutely. Coaching is not only for care partners and families. People living with an Alzheimer's or dementia diagnosis, particularly in the early stages, can benefit greatly from working directly with a dementia coach. Sessions can help with understanding the diagnosis, processing what lies ahead, participating actively in care planning, and maintaining a sense of agency and voice in decisions about their own life and care.
-
Every coaching relationship is different, but clients typically leave sessions with greater clarity about their situation, practical strategies they can apply right away, a better understanding of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, help navigating care decisions, and a sense of direction and confidence going forward.
-
No. Dementia coaching and therapy are different services with different purposes. Coaching is a non-clinical, forward-focused service centered on education, practical guidance, and support. It does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions and does not establish a therapeutic relationship. If you are experiencing grief, depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns related to your caregiving experience or diagnosis, therapy may be a better fit. Katie Green also provides dementia-specialized therapy through Emerald Green Therapy at emeraldgreentherapy.com for residents of Illinois, Michigan, Oregon, Texas, and Florida.
-
A good rule of thumb is that coaching focuses on the practical and educational side of the dementia journey, while therapy focuses on the emotional and mental health side. Many families and individuals find both helpful at different points. If you are unsure, feel free to reach out and we can help you figure out the best fit.
